Coastal Property Insurance Crisis: Policy Options in a Time of More Severe Storms and Rising Seas
Rising seas and more severe storms are driving a coastal property insurance crisis. Premiums are climbing, private insurers are pulling out of coastal states, and millions of homeowners face growing financial exposure. Low-income communities are least able to absorb these costs, and the ripple effects threaten property values and municipal tax bases across the coast.
This ELI webinar examines what federal and state policies could help stabilize the coastal insurance market while protecting vulnerable communities. Panelists included Alice Hill (Council on Foreign Relations), Dave Jones (UC Berkeley), Carolyn Kousky (Environmental Defense Fund), Jessica Dandridge (The Water Collaborative of Greater New Orleans), and Jeff Peterson (moderator).
